Mansard Roofs

For some reason I had a terrible time remembering the term “mansard roof ” for the longest time. It just doesn’t fall into common conversation easily. “This beer is as flat as a mansard roof” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

It is a very distinctive piece of architecture and, happily, somewhat common in the Village of Ossining. Here are a few random ones near my old stomping grounds.

This home was built by a judge in the 1920′s with boulders from the banks of the Hudson River. It is one of my very favorite houses. I sold it to the current owner and it is back on the market. Email me if you’re interested-he’ll hold the mortgage!
